Harry Potter Party in Downers Grove

Book as Costume
Originally uploaded by ricklibrarian.
A crowd of readers moved on downtown Downers Grove last night, awaiting the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Among the many activities was a costume contest. I did not hear who won, but my favorite was the girl who came as the book. In her interview with Anderson's Book Shop staff, she said that it took her three days to make her costume.

There were lots of Hogwart's student robes, many also sporting the Gryffindor scarf. The scarves looked pretty sharp with the black robes or black t-shirts. I think I know what I want for Christmas.

Of course, our reason for being there was to pick up the book, but there were several hours of party before midnight, so we visited Honey Dukes for chocolates. We also watched a bit of human-sized chess and saw wandmaking.

Bonnie had ticket #45. We had the book by 12:03. She started reading in the car on the way home. Laura gets the book next. I am last in line, which is good because I then get to take my time enjoying it.

More photos are on Flickr. Click the photo.

I notice that iTunes does not have Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I wonder why.

As someone who probably know his way around the Harry story, can you tell us if it is the end of Harry?

Who decides which books get press (Harry Potter) and which get censored? After all, censorship is becoming America's favorite past-time. The US gov't (and their corporate friends), already detain protesters, ban books like "America Deceived" from Amazon and Wikipedia, shut down Imus and fire 21-year tenured, BYU physics professor Steven Jones because he proved explosives, thermite in particular, took down the WTC buildings. Free Speech forever (especially for books).
Last link (before Google Books caves to pressure and drops the title):
America Deceived (Book)

Hi - I work at the Des Plaines Public Library and we had an awesome HP party, too - check out our YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/PlainTalkTV and you can watch two "episodes" from the party. Thanks for sharing the news about Downers Grove's party - it was definitely a once in a lifetime night for libraries!

I love harry potter as well but some mean and annoying girls in my class decided to tell me the end before I'd read it!
Please check out my site (http://summerfun-josie.blogspot.com) no one has bothered to visit yet

Hi, I just found your BLOG, and I just love it! I have forwarded the link on to the rest of my family - all who are great readers, especially my husband who is never without a book in his hands.

Also - I lived in the western surburbs of Chicago for over 45 years, the last ten of them in Hinsdale, a neighbor of Downers Grove. For the last eighteen years, I have lived in New England, but I still miss the midwest and the great people.

Keep up the great site - I really enjoy it.

M.
